FAIRFIELD - Work has begun on the long-awaited North Connector project.

Visible from Interstate 80, Solano Community College and Suisun Valley Road, grading has started on a huge expanse of land north of the truck scales -- and that is just the first phase of the project.

Intended to eventually connect central Fairfield with the Cordelia area, the road will run parallel to the north side of Interstate 80. The first phase of the North Connector is expected to be finished by late 2009.

'We would be looking at around the end of next year, a 12- to 18-month construction period depending on the weather,' said Gene Cortright, director of Fairfield's Department of Public Works.

The first phase of the project, which started in July, will stretch from the east side of Suisun Valley Road to the west bank of Suisun Creek, Cortright said.

The work is connected to a major project by Garaventa Properties in the area. Garaventa needed to build a two-lane road to service its land, and the city is paying the added costs to make it four lanes and incorporate it into the North Connector.

The goal is to take local traffic off the freeway and ease congestion.
