FAIRFIELD, Calif. -- With its sights set on expansion of its international business outside North America, Jelly Belly Candy Company announced plans to build a manufacturing facility in Rayong, Thailand. Construction is scheduled to begin later
this year.

"We see tremendous potential in the international markets, and this manufacturing facility will help us build business overseas. The candy manufactured in the new Thailand plant will be earmarked for distribution and sales in international markets," said Herman G. Rowland, Sr., chairman of the board and fourth-generation candy maker. Producing candy in Thailand will not impact North American distribution, manufacturing or jobs in the U.S.

The company currently has two manufacturing facilities in Fairfield, California and in North Chicago, Illinois, where Jelly Belly(R) jelly beans and 100 other fine candies are produced and distributed. Approximately 650 employees work for the company in the U.S. "We are an American manufacturer and will continue to maintain our domestic operations, using American labor and raw materials," said Rowland.

Jelly Belly jelly beans are an internationally recognized global brand with a loyal consumer base. The company currently distributes in 25 international markets. The new manufacturing facility dedicated to building business in existing markets and opening new international markets represents significant growth opportunities.

The new Jelly Belly Candy Company/Thailand plant will produce Jelly Belly jelly beans to the company's exacting standards for high-quality gourmet confections. The secret recipes and candy making processes that produce the distinctive Jelly Belly bean will be used in Thailand production and overseen by U.S. management.

The plant, located on 6.4 acres in Rayong near Bangkok, will be approximately 50,000 square feet, with room for expansion. Construction is expected to begin in six months, and candy will go into distribution within eighteen months.

Jelly Belly Candy Company is a privately held confectionery manufacturer, owned and operated by the fourth and fifth generation of the candy making family. Best known for that presidential favorite, Jelly Belly jelly beans, the company also makes chocolate-covered candies, gummies, jells, candy corn, and sweets for all the major seasons. Headquartered in Fairfield, California, the company operates two U.S. manufacturing facilities as well as public tours in California and Wisconsin which attract 750,000 visitors a year.
