The University of California this week launched a Global Health Institute – with UC Davis researchers taking a lead role in two key areas of study – to better understand health problems around the world, the university announced.

The institute received $4 million in start-up funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Researchers at UC Davis will study the health issues of migrating people and the effect on human health from nutrition, water, animals and the environment.

The institute initially will offer a one-year master's degree and enroll its first students in the fall of 2011.
