Rubber meets road in Suisun

SUISUN CITY - Suisun City Councilmembers gave the final nod Tuesday night to two contractors to start fixing up and resurfacing some of the city's more run-down streets later this summer.
That was after one Shoveller Drive resident and City Councilman Mike Segala expressed concern about how effective the process being used will be to repair the street surfaces.
Segala was concerned the streets would have to be rigorously cleaned before using the proposed asphalt rubber chip sealing, a new method the city is trying for the first time.
'Mother Nature will let you know if this stuff doesn't work,' Segala said.
The council unanimously approved awarding a
$1.05 million contract to International Surfacing Systems of Chandler, Ariz. to resurface the city's worst streets with the asphalt rubber chip sealing.
A much smaller $244,820 slurry sealing contract went to CA Paving Maintenance of Sacramento to also do part of the work.
The new asphalt rubber chip seal method is supposed to allow the city to repair more streets and ensure the repairs last longer, according to the report presented to the council.
The project will involve 38 streets. A third of those streets will be resurfaced after the Suisun-Solano Water Authority replaces some water pipes across the city.
Suisun City is spending nearly $1 million to pay for its share of the work, and the Suisun-Solano Water Authority is contributing $408,000.
