UC Davis gets $7.5M for wireless research for Army

The University of California Davis will likely get about $7.5 million of a $35.5 million grant to research wireless networks to connect a mix of highly mobile soldiers, tanks, aerial drones, robotics, ground vehicles, manned aircraft and ground sensor networks.

The 10-year grant from the U.S. Army Research Laboratory will create a Communications Networks Research Center in Maryland, with research being conducted across the country..

The project seeks to create networks that are not impacted by interference and jamming and that can reconfigure themselves if and as needed.

Researchers at Davis have been working for years on wireless mesh sensor networks, in which individual nodes can operate independently and at the same time operate as system.

The Pennsylvania State University is the lead institution in the research, along with Davis, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, UC Cruz and City University of New York.
