Vaca council awards contract for transportation center

VACAVILLE - Vacaville city councilmembers gave their blessing to a transportation center in south Vacaville that will make it easier for residents to catch buses to the rest of the region.
Councilmembers awarded the $3.8 million contract Tuesday night to build the proposed Vacaville Intermodal Station to Hess Concrete Construction Inc. of American Canyon.
Concerns over possible state licensing problems for Hess had the city approve a provision that if Hess can't clear up the problem, the contract will go to the next lowest bidder.
The Vacaville Public Works Department had heard Tuesday that Hess' license had been suspended, but Hess' president denied that had happened. Hess has until Friday to clear up the matter.
The proposed station, which will be located at the north corner of Allison Drive and Ulatis Road, will include a 10-bay bus island and a 200-space parking lot with pedestrian shelters and rest rooms.
Work on the project is expected to start in early December and be done by August 2010, weather permitting.
