At Hearn & Nolan Construction, It Pays to Volunteer

(Vacaville, CA) Annette Davis, who works in the accounting department at Hearn Construction, may now get paid for part of the time she spends visiting the local jail. For twelve years, she and her husband have been visiting the county jail with a church group to mentor kids who are incarcerated. They visit several times a week, trying to present kids with the means to make better choices and opportunities to think about the consequences of their actions on their families and the community. Now her company is looking for ways to encourage all of their employees to volunteer in ways that interest them.

Hearn Construction and James Nolan Construction recently created a new program compensating employees for time spent doing community service. The plan allows for 8 hours of community service per year to be paid as part of an employee’s regular salary. This means that employees could participate in service activities during working hours within the guidelines set by the company. With Hearn and Nolan’s combined 80 employees, at 8 hours apiece, the company is donating a potential 640 hours of employee time to the various communities where employees live.

Fred Hearn, CEO and President, says the company decided to take this approach because it is too hard to try to pinpoint causes that will make a difference in all of the communities where employees live. The employee base is spread from the Auburn area to Healdsburg, and encompasses at least four counties. “The biggest contribution we can make is getting our employees involved in their own neighborhoods,” he said.
