The Fiscal Year 2010 Omnibus Appropriations Bill signed by President Obama includes funding for two projects in Fairfield.
The Police Activities League Matt Garcia Youth Center will receive $160,000 to provide increased services. The after-school program, The Place to Be After Three, will receive $350,000.
Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and former Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher, D-Solano, were instrumental in securing the funding. In addition, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., provided strong support for both projects throughout the lengthy process leading to passage of the bill.
Also included are three military construction projects for Travis Air Force Base. The Taxiway Mike Bypass Road, funded at $6 million, will be used to build a two-lane bypass around the taxiway, easing safety and security concerns.
The Travis Community Consortium, a local advocacy group, of which the city of Fairfield (and Solano EDC) is a member, requested the project through the area's congressional delegation.
Two other military construction projects, originally contained in the president's 2010 budget, were also retained in the bill. One project, funded at $6.9 million, is construction of a KC-10 cargo load training facility on base. The other project is to replace the base's fuel distribution system, funded at nearly $15.4 million.
