VACAVILLE - It might not be a lot but the nearly $100,000 the Vacaville School District earned recently as a green incentive award is still a hardy recognition for a job well done.

The school district received two Savings by Design awards from Pacific Gas and Electric for the green construction of the new Fairmont Charter Elementary School and Will C. Wood High School's new science building -- both Measure V bond projects.

'We're thrilled,' said Rochelle Sklansky, Fairmont's principal. 'It's a way for our kids to understand that (they're) doing a good thing for the community by being a green school.'

District superintendent John Aycock echoed Sklansky's enthusiasm.

'I'm just very pleased that our director of facilities and our construction team worked closely with PG&E and other members of the energy conservation consortium to ensure that we had energy savings systems installed in both the science wing at Wood and at Fairmont,' he said.

The Savings by Design program encourages nonresidential energy-efficient design and construction. It is sponsored by California's investor-owned utilities, which includes PG&E.

To qualify for the incentive award, the project must meet certain goals such as savings in kilowatts per hour and meeting or exceeding Title 24 for energy efficiency, said Leigh Coop, the district's director of facilities.

The money, $73,854 for Fairmont and $18,702 for Wood, will go back into the Measure V construction pot, which is empty while the district waits to be paid back by the state for other construction projects, Coop said.
