FAIRFIELD - Carmakers aren't the only ones excited about the national 'Cash for Clunkers' program. Car dismantlers have high hopes as well.

Officials with Schnitzer Steel Industries, the parent company of Fairfield's Pick-N-Pull Auto Dismantlers, are anticipating 'a significant positive response' from dealers as the program goes forward, they said in a press release.

The program offers rebates for owners who trade in an old car and buy a new, more-efficient one. Dealers, however, face potential fines or penalties if trade-in vehicles aren't processed and destroyed.

The program only began July 27, and spokeswoman Jan Daniels said many dealers are deciding to wait to dismantle the trade-in cars until they get reimbursed by the government.
