Caltrans has picked a Mare Island contractor to overhaul all 66 cars on its Capitals and San Joaquin corridor rail services.
Paris-based Alstom, which will open the Mare Island facility in October, got the $13.1 million contract to replace doors, upgrade wheelchair lifts and do a “wreck repair” on one car.
The work will take two years at the 112,000-square-foot facility.
The Capitals and San Joaquin services are operated by Amtrak for Caltrans, the state transportation department. The Capitals service runs from Sacramento to San Jose. The San Joaquin service links cities between Emeryville, Sacramento and Bakersfield.
The systems serve more than 30 stations, carrying 2 million passengers a year.
