FAIRFIELD - Cyclists and joggers will soon be able to get a little farther east before they have to rejoin Fairfield streets.

Work is under way on the latest extension of the Linear Park, the paved trail that currently stretches from Solano Community College along an old railroad right-of-way to an intersection with North Texas Street.

The latest project, scheduled to wrap up in late October, will extend the path to Dover Avenue. Fairfield has long been inching the project eastward, hoping eventually to reach the city's northeastern border.

'It is not the highest of priorities, so we typically build segments when we are able to acquire some matching grant money or work with a developer,' Public Works Manager Fred Beiner said.

The last phase of the project will be the construction of a garden area along Dover Avenue, which will have some landscaping and four 'birdhouse-inspired' sculptures from local artist Phillip Glashoff.

The work comes at a time when Fairfield is particularly strapped for cash. Many planned projects, including many other parks and a new police department building, have been put on hold.

The Linear Park extension keeps chugging forward, however. That is in large part because Fairfield isn't the only one paying for it. The federal government is paying for about 80 percent of the costs through a pool of money set aside for 'congestion management.'
